Reading is something that I have always enjoyed doing.‍ When I was younger my parents read to me daily, fostering a love of reading in me.‍ In elementary school I was always in the advanced reading group; reading chapter books ahead of my classmates. I look back fondly on the chapter books that later became my stepping stones to greater, more advanced books. I love reading because of the connection that I feel with the characters. When I read, I do so on a personal level, immersing myself into the lives of the protagonists. The joy I get from reading is like no other. It is impossible to connect on such a level by watching a movie or television show.

Once I learned to read I never looked back. I progressed from basic stories to chapter books, gradually increasing in the length and depth of the material. I found the older I got the more connections I was able to make to my life, making the experience more meaningful. One of the wonderful things about books is how each one is a unique combination of the words and letters that we use every day. ‍The words themselves are not that special, but when strung together in harmony, they can become something unique.‍ We get our words by reorganizing just 26 letters, it’s astounding to think of all the possibilities.

Reading is special in how it affects each person differently. The reaction that I get when reading about Pip in ‍Great Expectations‍ is not the same as that of my teacher or classmates. Last year I took AP English in high school. I do not like to write, yet I enjoy reading so much that it was worth the endless essays. I relished the precious class time when we discussed the current novel we were reading. I learned so much by listening to my classmates. They exposed new ideas and concepts that I never would have thought of on my own.‍ I will cherish the memories I made in that class.‍ The beauty of reading came out in that class through the many interpretations of specific lines of poetry from my fellow students. A word that meant one thing was used to mean something completely different in the analysis of someone else.

‍My parents helped to jumpstart my love of reading‍, which has become a great influence on me. Literacy is something that I value very much, and I am proud to say that I am literate. I owe my parents so much for enabling me to see the beauty in reading. They encouraged my love of reading, and for that I am forever grateful.

‍Reading is something that I love to do, and that I value very much. I will always enjoy reading. Reading is a great outside influence on my life, one that is unlike any other. I will always enjoy reading, and will never underestimate the importance of such a skill. Reading provides solace when I am in need of comfort or stress relief, and I know that I can always rely on the characters and their familiar tales to be there when I need it.
